The Trust Trap

Truth Seeker

By completing this activity, you will develop deeper critical thinking and media literacy skills by exploring how information can become distorted, emotionally framed, or manipulated — even when it comes from trusted or well-known sources.

Learners will:
  • understand why it is important to compare multiple sources before forming opinions,
  • recognize how emotions, repetition, and group thinking can influence belief,
  • explore how misinformation evolves through the “ripple effect,”
  • reflect on how division and extreme narratives can shape public opinion,
  • and strengthen their ability to think independently instead of automatically “taking sides.”

Through flash mobs, real-world examples, reflection tasks, and discussions, you will gain practical skills for navigating complex information responsibly and questioning narratives with curiosity, balance, and critical awareness.

Task 2. Controlled Opposition
Read the examples of controlled opposition above.

Now imagine you are observing a debate, protest, political conflict, or online argument.

Ask yourself:
  • Are people encouraged to choose only between two extreme sides?
  • Could the conflict distract from bigger questions?
  • Who really benefits from division and emotional reactions? And how?
  • Are alternative perspectives ignored or silenced?

Write down one real-life example (historical, political, media-related, online or cases from popular culture such as Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun) where you think people may have been pushed into “taking sides.”
